The Electrolyte Industry is Selling Most of Us Something We Don't Need
From Gatorade to Liquid IV to LMNT, the electrolyte market has been one of the more successful examples of the wellness industry creating demand for a solution to a problem most people don't have.

The electrolyte industry has seen the full spectrum. What started as a legitimate scientific solution to a specific athletic problem has evolved into a multi-billion dollar market selling daily hydration rituals to people sitting at desks, going on moderate walks, and doing 45-minute gym sessions.
Understanding how that happened, and whether any of it applies to you, requires going back to where it actually started.
Where it started
In 1965, researchers at the University of Florida were approached by the football team's staff with a real problem. Players were practicing in Florida heat for hours at a time, losing up to 18 pounds of fluid during a single three-hour game, and not urinating at all during practices because they were so dehydrated. Performance was suffering and players were experiencing serious heat-related illness.
Dr. Robert Cade and his team analyzed the sweat these players were losing and found it contained significant amounts of sodium and potassium, electrolytes that govern muscle function and fluid balance. They formulated a drink to replace what was being lost. Water, sugar, sodium, potassium, phosphate, and eventually lemon juice to make it palatable.
That was Gatorade. And for that specific use case, it worked.
The problem came later, when the marketing machine figured out that the use case could be expanded far beyond elite athletes practicing in extreme heat for hours at a time.
How the marketing expanded the market
By the 1980s and 1990s, Gatorade had become the drink you had at your kid's Saturday soccer practice. The thing you grabbed at the gas station after a light gym session. The thing you reached for when you were thirsty, regardless of what you'd been doing.
The original use case, replacing electrolytes lost through extreme sustained exertion in the heat, was never the pitch to the mass market. The pitch was simpler and less specific. You need to hydrate. This helps you hydrate better. Drink this.
It worked because the claim isn't technically wrong. Electrolytes do play a role in hydration and fluid absorption. What the marketing consistently obscured was the question of whether the average person consuming a normal diet and doing moderate exercise was actually deficient in any of them.
The next generation
Liquid IV, Nuun, Pedialyte for adults, and a wave of premium hydration products arrived in the 2010s with cleaner ingredients, better branding, and a higher price point. The pitch evolved to match the wellness consumer who had graduated past Gatorade's sugar content but still believed they needed supplemental electrolytes.
These products found a large and receptive audience. They were positioned as sophisticated hydration science for health-conscious people. The ingredients were generally better. The marketing was significantly better. The fundamental question of whether most of the people buying them needed them remained unaddressed.
Then came LMNT.
LMNT and the sodium conversation
LMNT launched in 2018 with a formula built around high sodium content, specifically targeted at people following low carbohydrate or ketogenic diets. That targeting is worth understanding because it's where LMNT's product rationale is actually grounded.
When insulin levels are chronically low, as they are on a ketogenic diet, the kidneys excrete more sodium than usual. People following strict low carb diets can become sodium depleted where people eating a standard diet typically don't. For that specific population, there's a reasonable scientific case for higher sodium supplementation.
The problem is that LMNT, through its association with the broader wellness and fitness community, became a daily staple for a much wider population than the one it was originally designed to serve. People doing moderate exercise, eating normal diets, and living in temperate climates started adding high-sodium electrolyte packets to their water bottles as a health practice.
That population doesn't have a sodium deficit. If anything, they have the opposite problem.
What the actual numbers look like
The CDC puts average daily sodium intake for American adults at approximately 3,400 milligrams. The recommended maximum is 2,300 milligrams. The average American is already consuming nearly 50 percent more sodium than recommended before they use an electrolyte packet.
Chronic high sodium intake raises blood pressure in salt-sensitive individuals, a category that includes roughly 25 to 50 percent of people with hypertension. Sustained high blood pressure is one of the primary drivers of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and kidney damage. Nearly half of American adults have hypertension. Adding high-sodium electrolyte products on top of an already high-sodium diet is not a neutral decision for that population.
The industry's consistent framing of electrolyte supplementation as universally beneficial hydration optimization doesn't account for the fact that a significant portion of their customer base is already consuming too much sodium and adding more carries real health implications.
When electrolytes actually make sense
Electrolytes do matter. Sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium play essential roles in muscle function, nerve signaling, and fluid balance. The question isn't whether they're important. It's whether you're actually depleted.
Actual electrolyte depletion occurs during prolonged, intense exercise in heat. Running a marathon or an Ironman. Hours of physical labor outdoors in summer. A multi-hour training session where you're sweating heavily throughout. These are the conditions that produce the kind of electrolyte losses that Gatorade and the others were originally formulated to address.
A 45-minute gym session followed by a shower is not those conditions. A moderate walk in mild weather is not those conditions. A standard workday, even an active one, is generally not those conditions.
If you're eating a reasonably varied diet and doing moderate exercise, your kidneys are managing your electrolyte balance without intervention. Adding a supplement to that equation isn't optimization. It's adding cost and, in the case of high-sodium products, potentially adding risk.
What to actually do with this
The most useful thing is to understand what you're actually doing and why. If you're sweating heavily for extended periods in hot conditions, replacing what you're losing makes sense.
If you're not sweating an unusual amount, water handles your hydration needs. The food you eat contains the electrolytes your body needs under normal conditions. The electrolyte industry has done an effective job of convincing a large population that this isn't sufficient. The science doesn't support that conclusion for most people.
Check your sodium intake before adding more. Understand what conditions actually create the depletion these products are designed to address. And don't let a well-funded marketing campaign convince you that your tap water and your normal diet aren't doing the job they've always done.
